Simon Cowell: the Bad Hero of TV

June 29, 2009

A while ago, I saw a TV documentary about the life of Simon Cowell. I’m sure nobody in the English-speaking world of today would not now this guy. He is being labeled as the King of “Me” Media. I’m not sure what that title means but I think it must be something big.

Many people (including me before I saw the docu) think that he is just a hugely successful guy who is so full of himself and who has done well enough in his career to earn the right (and courage) to say exactly what he thinks. Even if that meant hurting other people.

That doesn’t make him sound like a hero at all. But after knowing more about this man, I’ve decided that eventhough he’s absurdly rude sometimes, we can still learn some really valuable lessons from him.

He’s what he is right now because of a few key things:

Forced Friendship

June 28, 2009

Yup. I know the title sounds awkward. And I also know getting into a forced friendship is more than awkward. It’s just that some people are pressuring me to make friends with people who I haven’t talked to for a while because of some rifts. And I don’t feel any pressure at all (Janina* lang? :D ).

It’s true having enemies doesn’t feel good. But if having those enemies saves you from a lot of other stresses and potential social danger, then there’s nothing wrong with it. Safety and security is the second most important human need according to Abraham Maslow. It’s even more important than love and belongingness. So if those enemies are a danger to your safety and security, why bother having them as friends?

The King is Back and is Still Bad

June 24, 2009

“When you walked through the door
It was clear to me
You’re the one they adore, who they came to see
You’re a … rock star
Everybody wants you
Player… Who could really blame you
We’re the ones who made you”

Yes. For those inalert people (ampot? :D ) who haven’t yet heard, Marshall Bruce Mathers III a.k.a. Eminem a.k.a. Slim Shady is back with anew album.

I especially like his “We Made You” which is qouted above. It’s so catchy and hilarious. I couldn’t stop laughing when I saw the video. It’s so full of recent celebrity issues and evn includes Sarah Palin.

Bull Theory on H1N1 and politics

June 23, 2009

I have this theory that the government is letting Influenza A H1N1 to thrive in the Philippines in order for the people to be scared and focus on the disease instead of the many anomalies happening in the government.

The DOH has been saying repeatedly that there’s nothing to fear in H1N1 because the death is just an isolated case. Bull.

Do you remember when the flu was still new and there were still no cases in the Philippines? DOH kept saying there’s nothing to worry about because we are ready for the disease and the strict procedures in the country’s immigration points ensure that there will be no cases in the Philippines. A few days later, we had our first H1N1 case. Bull.

All These Beautiful Girls

June 22, 2009

(This is to buffer all those serious stuff I’ve been posting. :D )

To all the ladies out there:

How many of you wear “inguinal” (singit)  shorts in public? And how many of you love wearing cleavage blouses and shirts outside your homes? What do you feel when you are wearing those (b*tchy) things? Does it make you feel more beautiful or more attractive?

Well, here are somethings you might want to consider:

1. It doesn’t make you any more beautiful.  It doesn’t make guys like you. Sure, you might attract guys’ attention but  you should bear in mind that we are being attracted by your almost seen private areas and not by your beauty or your personality. Unless you’re a prostitute, what’s the point?

Mother of all Heroes

Now, this might sound cheesy. but hey, we all need inspiration sometimes.

I have always admired Mother Teresa. At times, I even wish I could be like her. Encarta says she is a Roman Catholic nun, founder of the Missionaries of Charity, and recipient of the 1979 Nobel Peace Prize. I think she’s so much more than that.

In this world where people only think about themselves, it’s nice to know some are still capable of really being selfless. I mean, when was the last time you thought of helping the poor, of planting trees in deluded mountains, of saving children from prostitution, and of helping those who are dying? And even in that very rare moment that you thiought of those things, have you ever done something?

Kiddie Books, Seasons and Wisdom

June 21, 2009

A while ago, I read a little book entitled “What’s the Season” which was part of a series of Time (Magazine) for kids.

It read:

In summer, it is hot. We go to the beach or pool.

In fall, it is cool. We rake the leaves that drop from the trees.

In winter, it is cold. We wear warm clothes and play in the snow.

In spring, it is rainy. We use umbrellas to stay dry.

The sun shines in every season. Rain may fall in every season.

So naïve.

Devotions, Studies, and Nursing Care

Before we start our classes, we have this ‘ceremony’ we call ‘devotion’. This consists of a sharing (a Bible verse, a short story of inspiration) and a prayer. This was supposed to go in line with our school’s vision of “Christian education”. When our instructors first implemented this, it was a bit boring. It was like “let’s get this over with” sort of thing since teachers assigned students to do it and I believe most students only thought of it as another requirement.

This went on until some instructors asked us to share personal experiences or thoughts that may inspire the class. It was a hit. Every now and then, one of my classmates would cry in front while telling his/her life story. It was entertaining and sometimes really inspiring.

Bathroom Rockstars

June 20, 2009

Having lived in several boarding houses and having shared bathrooms with several other people, I have heard my fair share of bathroom concerts. Believe me, I have heard even the most cold and dead quiet people sing their hearts (and throats) out in the bathroom.

to self-review or to enroll at review centers?

I know it’s rather too early for me to be talking about this (I’m a fourth year nursing student and we’re just in the first month of the first semester) but my friend and I had an interesting conversation about this.

When will Pinoy TV get it right?

June 17, 2009

It’s an undeniable fact: Filipinos love soap operas.

And since I’m a Filipino, I also like soap operas.  This sounds like some logic exercise from school but seriously, there’s more to this than logic. Here’s the story:

What’s up Philippines?

June 14, 2009

Tony Blair said, “A simple way to take the measure of a country is to look at how many want out and how many want in.”

Now, isn’t it almost every Filipino’s dream to go abroad?

GME vs. ABS, once and for all

Every time I visit starmometer.com, or pep.ph, or even pass through GME channel when looking for a show to watch, I always come by people saying GME is number one. That GME is “nangunguna”. That GME stars are the hottest or the biggest. And that GME is the best TV station in the country.

And I would be pissed big time.

Hon. Connie Assumption, Representative, District of Malacanang

Thousands of people from the key cities in the country have staged rallies against CON-ASS. The angry crowds included priests, nuns, and children. Thousands more have expressed their disapproval through the internet. And I know, millions are also uttering their disgust and disappointment in the privacy of their homes.

What are these congressmen doing?

You got a pimple? Gross! Get Lost!

Have you seen that cosmetic commercial where a cute girl is walking and suddenly drops something and a guy picks it up for her but when the girl fixed her hair, the guy saw a pimple and looked so disgusted? (Grammar police please spare me!)

I am more disgusted than that guy. Not because of the girl’s pimple but of the fact that cosmetic companies are making their Filipino audience shallow and stupid.

Welcome H1N1! Mabuhay!

Is it another manifestation of our famed hospitality?

The Philippines now has the most number of cases of Influenza A H1N1 in Southeast Asia. Considering the fact that our country was one of the last to get H1N1 cases, this news spells TROUBLE. Congratulations to us.

Sex, sex, and more sex. Not.

In today’s society, premarital sex sounds as ordinary as breakfast. Not to me.

I am enraged by the fact that people use being human or being in the 21st century as an excuse for sex before marriage. Hello? That’s exactly why we are humans right? Because we can control our instincts better than lower forms of animals like dogs who do it anytime, anywhere. Come on.
