Hey teacher, are you God?

June 14, 2009

The title sends shivers down my spine. Not because I have ever believed that one of my teachers was God. It’s just that I have had terrible experiences with instructors who think they are God. Terrible, terrible.

Itago na lang natin sila sa code name na TGCs. As in Teachers with God Complex.

So what makes TGC’s so intolerable?

1. They do not recognize and accept their mistakes. Even if they’re obviously wrong, they do everything just to cover up, even sacrificing the lesson itself, or a student’s self-esteem. It’s like they’re saying, “Hey, I’m an instructor. I’m incapable of making mistakes.” So wrong.

2. They do not accept suggestions or comments at all. But they criticize a student like they were perfect. They don’t stop until the student’s self-image is shattered. And yet some of them even start lessons with prayers. Prayers.

3. They can’t accept defeat. If an argument rises up and the student is obviously winning, TGCs change the topic, critic the students’ personal life, and sometimes even walk out. So immature.

4. They expect students to respect them no matter what. What? Since when can somebody enforce respect? If ever it is possible, it won’t be respect at all. Fear and disgust would be more likely. You see, no matter how they are supposed to be know-it-alls, they fail to recognize the fact that respect is earned. How can you ask your students to respect you if you treat them as lower forms of human beings?

5. TGCs are seldom effective. Although they are supposed to IMPART knowledge, all they do is try to IMPRESS students. Guess who’s impressed. Right. Nobody. Keep wishing sir/ma’am.

As a student to these “perfect” and “godly” teachers, I just try to minimize conflict with them as much as possible. After all, I won’t benefit from opposing them. Might as well keep quiet and focus on the lesson.

Like what a friend of mine said,

Don’t let them get to you. Just let them be. They’re just deeply insecure. That’s why they have to put students down in order for them to increase their self esteem.

That or they’re just plain evil.

Sigh. These people make me long for the end of semester.

sometimes teachers use rigidity and sternness as a way to compensate for their lack of knowledge and skills.

my tips: understand them. just go with flow. be patient. respect their age. don’t stoop down to their level. :)
