to self-review or to enroll at review centers?

June 20, 2009

I know it’s rather too early for me to be talking about this (I’m a fourth year nursing student and we’re just in the first month of the first semester) but my friend and I had an interesting conversation about this.

See, he was telling me he was considering self-review for the board exam. And he was asking me what I think about review centers. Well, here’s the deal:

            Let’s see first the pro’s of self-review:

>It’s a lot cheaper. The only expenses you will have to make is for books. And who says you have to buy them?

>You can plan and tailor fit your review schedule to your lifestyle and convenience. Review centers will require you to attend daily classes at specific hours. In self-review, you can do whatever you want, whenever you want.

>Pride and self-satisfaction if you pass the board on your own. That’s heavy.

But you also have to consider these:

> review centers give guided review based on tried and tested methods and trends. They give you a definite review schedule and plan.

> even topnotchers and students from the best Nursing schools in the country like UP, UST and the name of your school here, still enroll for review centers.

> pressure from review assistants and fellow reviewees will remind you and inspire you to keep reviewing and will prevent you from partying or doing nothing in the review period.

> review centers have exam tips that you’ll never come up with on your own.

The final question is, taking the board exam requires a lot of money, time and effort. Are you willing to take the risk?

Note: RNs’ and previous exam takers’ opinions are welcome.
