Mother of all Heroes

June 22, 2009

Now, this might sound cheesy. but hey, we all need inspiration sometimes.

I have always admired Mother Teresa. At times, I even wish I could be like her. Encarta says she is a Roman Catholic nun, founder of the Missionaries of Charity, and recipient of the 1979 Nobel Peace Prize. I think she’s so much more than that.

In this world where people only think about themselves, it’s nice to know some are still capable of really being selfless. I mean, when was the last time you thought of helping the poor, of planting trees in deluded mountains, of saving children from prostitution, and of helping those who are dying? And even in that very rare moment that you thiought of those things, have you ever done something?

I know. It hurts to admit that we are indeed, selfish and oblivious to the problems of our world. And it is a shame for us. So we become defensive. We say, “How could I help others when I can’t even help myself?”

Yup, I’ve been there. And sadly, I never really did more than think. Excuses always came up. Sigh. I think whatever happened to Mother Teresa was divine intervention. It’s like God said, “Hey guys, I’m sending you an example.”

Anyway, I have read an entire book about her and it was really inspiring. It reminds me that there should be more to life than just satisfying our selfish wants and needs. It reminds me that we should always think bigger, think wider.

Here are some quotes from her:

“The hunger for love is much more difficult to remove than the hunger for bread.”

“The greatest destroyer of peace is abortion because if a mother can kill her own child what is left but for me to kill you and you to kill me? There is nothing between.”

And here’s good news:

In 2003, six years after her death, Mother Teresa began a passage to sainthood with her beatification by Pope John Paul II. Beatification is the first step toward canonization, the act that proclaims a person’s sainthood.
