A while ago, I saw a TV documentary about the life of Simon Cowell. I’m sure nobody in the English-speaking world of today would not now this guy. He is being labeled as the King of “Me” Media. I’m not sure what that title means but I think it must be something big.
Many people (including me before I saw the docu) think that he is just a hugely successful guy who is so full of himself and who has done well enough in his career to earn the right (and courage) to say exactly what he thinks. Even if that meant hurting other people.
That doesn’t make him sound like a hero at all. But after knowing more about this man, I’ve decided that eventhough he’s absurdly rude sometimes, we can still learn some really valuable lessons from him.
He’s what he is right now because of a few key things:
First, he dares to go where no one else has gone before. His biggest ideas will be nothing without a great leap of faith. His biggest works: Pop Idol (the precursor of today’s crazily success ful shows American Idol and Britain’s Got Talent), Westlife (the boy band that holds some unbeatable records and has sold more than 50 million albumas worldwide), and many more are all out of nowhere. He saw the potential, invested money and effort, and is now earning the rewards. Fact: He also producced Pwer Rangers and Teletubbies.
Second, he listens only to the right people( including, but not liumited to, himself). According to him, he relied on his father in time of dilemmas. He also has great friends who are greatly successful in the showbiz and music industy. Although many people told him what to do and what to avoid doing, he always knew which voice was to trust and whose voice was to ignore. Many times, he has been discouraged from doing things that people thought will do him no good. And many times he didn’t listen which is primarily the reason why he is so successful right now.
Lastly, he is plain honest. He thinks that being a judge especially in a singing contest means being honest and straighforward. Because if one says something is great even if deep inside he thinks that it’s horrible, then he’s just making himself and everybody else stupid. Plus, if he was so kind and pretentious on TV, he won’t be as popular as he is right now.
These things are hard to do. But I know in time we will also find our inner voices, our own wisdom and our own success.
