Welcome H1N1! Mabuhay!

June 14, 2009

Is it another manifestation of our famed hospitality?

The Philippines now has the most number of cases of Influenza A H1N1 in Southeast Asia. Considering the fact that our country was one of the last to get H1N1 cases, this news spells TROUBLE. Congratulations to us.

Upon hearing this, I thought, “What the hell?” Isn’t anybody doing something about this? Are we just going to sit down and wait for the virus to infect us all?

And then reality hit me.

With the supreme priority given by our government to health (as manifested by the immense shortage of equipment and manpower in gov’t hospitals and health agencies), we Filipinos are extremely vulnerable to the virus. In fact, even more defenseless than Britney Spears is to Manny Pacquaio in a boxing fight.

So who’s to blame? I’m not sure.

Of course, our intelligent and selfless we-have-to-pass-the-CON-ASS-asap congressmen and our let’s-make-a-circus-out-of-this-sex-video senators will be accountable. They are the ones allotting government funds to the different government agencies. So if there is inaccurate and disproportionate distribution of funds, who is to blame? Yes, nobody. Unless you want to have an early death.

Then there are the people from DOH. I know they have a problem with funds among other things but they have to up their game in situations like this. (Rico Blanco: Kung ayaw may dahilan, kung gusto palaging merong paraan.)

The point is, this virus has entered the country and is disturbing schools and businesses aside from infecting more and more people. All because, whether intentional or not, some people failed to do their jobs well.

This brings me back to the dilemma of wearing or not wearing a mask when going out. Should I put myself at the mercy of those viruses just to avoid those “looks” and comments from other people around me?

Hmm. Maybe I should do it later. When an H1N1 case will be declared in San Fernando City or in my hometown, whatever comes first. But I hope I won’t be that first case. Or better yet, I hope that first case never comes.
